Women in Leadership: Authority, Influence and Strategic Impact

View Dates & Options

Leadership does not become more effective when women are taught to imitate a narrow model of authority. This program develops the practical leadership capability to influence decisions, communicate with weight, navigate power, lead change, and build strategic credibility without asking participants to become a different version of themselves.

Explanatory business visual for Course

Course Overview

The Women in Leadership program is an intensive live development experience for women who already carry responsibility, or are moving into roles where their impact depends on more than technical expertise. It focuses on the moments that shape leadership credibility: speaking when the room is uncertain, framing a recommendation for senior stakeholders, making decisions with incomplete information, challenging constructively, building sponsorship, and converting expertise into visible organizational influence.

The program is intentionally practical. Participants work with real stakeholder situations, leadership dilemmas, decision cases, communication scenarios, and career or organizational priorities from their own context. The aim is not to teach a gender stereotype of leadership. It is to strengthen the capabilities that allow women to exercise authority and strategic influence effectively in the systems they actually work in.

Public cohorts are live and instructor-led. Private and in-house versions can be adapted to the organization’s leadership framework, target population, sector, strategic priorities, and the specific transition points participants are navigating.

Who Delivers This Program

Programs are delivered by subject-matter practitioners selected for relevance to the topic, audience level, and delivery context. For private and in-house cohorts, facilitator matching considers the organization’s industry, participant profile, and the situations the cohort needs to handle more effectively. A facilitator biography can be provided when a cohort is confirmed.

How We Make This Relevant to You Specifically

A short pre-course profile captures participant roles, industries, current challenges, and objectives. Facilitators use that information to calibrate examples, practice, discussion, and emphasis. For in-house programs, the sponsor’s objectives, organizational context, and existing people or leadership frameworks can also be incorporated before delivery.

What Female-Forward Means in This Program

The program treats gender as context, not as a deficit. It creates room to examine how authority, visibility, sponsorship, communication style, organizational power, and expectations can shape leadership situations, while keeping the focus on practical capability and business impact.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

Exercise authority with clarity

Course Outline

The program is structured across the following modules. Depth and sequencing are calibrated to the delivery format and any customization agreed during the pre-course needs assessment.

Module 1: Leadership Identity, Authority and Credibility

Clarify the kind of leader you intend to be and how authority is built through judgement, consistency, contribution, and communication.

  • Distinguishing title, expertise, influence, and authority
  • Recognizing the leadership habits that helped earlier in your career but now limit scale
  • Defining standards, values, and non-negotiables
  • Building credibility when you are new to a role, team, function, or senior table
  • Using confidence as a behavior rather than waiting for it as a feeling
  • Workshop: personal leadership operating principles
Module 2: Power, Influence and Organizational Dynamics

Understand how decisions actually move through organizations and how to influence without relying only on formal hierarchy.

  • Mapping formal and informal power
  • Reading stakeholder interests, incentives, risk, and resistance
  • Influence without authority across functions
  • Building coalitions before the meeting rather than during it
  • Knowing when to persuade, negotiate, escalate, or let go
  • Workshop: stakeholder and influence map for a real priority
Module 3: Executive Communication and Strategic Framing

Move from detailed explanation to communication that helps leaders understand the issue, the stakes, the options, and the recommendation.

  • Leading with the headline rather than the history
  • Framing recommendations around business consequences
  • Using evidence without drowning the message in detail
  • Answering challenge questions without becoming defensive
  • Communicating bad news early and constructively
  • Practice: three-minute executive recommendation
Module 4: Decision-Making Under Ambiguity

Strengthen judgement when there is no perfect data set, no unanimous stakeholder view, and no risk-free option.

  • Separating reversible and irreversible decisions
  • Identifying assumptions, uncertainties, and decision criteria
  • Balancing pace with rigour
  • Recognizing over-analysis and premature consensus
  • Documenting decision logic and ownership
  • Case workshop: high-stakes decision under uncertainty
Module 5: Visibility, Reputation and Strategic Contribution

Make value visible in ways that are credible, useful, and connected to organizational priorities.

  • Moving from reliable contributor to recognized strategic voice
  • Choosing where visibility matters and where it does not
  • Communicating outcomes, lessons, and business value
  • Building a reputation around a few high-value capabilities
  • Using meetings, projects, and cross-functional work as visibility platforms
  • Exercise: strategic visibility plan
Module 6: Sponsorship, Networks and Career Capital

Build relationships that provide challenge, information, advocacy, and access rather than collecting contacts without purpose.

  • Mentors, sponsors, peers, advocates, and political allies
  • Creating reciprocal professional relationships
  • Asking for sponsorship without awkwardness or entitlement
  • Building networks before you urgently need them
  • Maintaining relationships across organizational boundaries
  • Workshop: relationship portfolio and next actions
Module 7: Leading Through Change and Resistance

Lead people when priorities shift, roles change, and uncertainty creates resistance or fatigue.

  • Explaining change without pretending certainty
  • Diagnosing different forms of resistance
  • Creating participation without surrendering leadership responsibility
  • Maintaining standards during disruption
  • Handling visible disagreement and passive resistance
  • Scenario practice: leading a contested change
Module 8: High-Stakes Leadership Conversations

Handle conversations where authority, relationships, risk, and emotion intersect.

  • Challenging a senior stakeholder constructively
  • Addressing repeated boundary violations
  • Giving direct feedback without unnecessary softening
  • Saying no while preserving the relationship
  • Negotiating role scope, resources, and priorities
  • Role-play: participant-selected leadership conversation
Module 9: Strategic Leadership Action Plan

Convert insight into a focused leadership agenda for the next six to twelve months.

  • Identifying the three leadership shifts with the highest leverage
  • Selecting visible strategic contributions
  • Defining relationship and sponsorship priorities
  • Choosing behaviors to stop, start, and strengthen
  • Setting evidence of progress rather than vague aspirations
  • Peer review and commitment plan
